Why winning the Sunshine Double is so prestigious

Every March, the tennis world shifts its focus to the US for two events: the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells and the Miami Open in Miami.  These tournaments, together known as the Sunshine Double, have a history of making their combined victory a rare and highly coveted achievement. Winning both isn't just rare; they require the ultimate test of consistency, endurance, and adaptability.

Here are some key reasons for its importance:

Elite Prestige

  • Indian Wells is considered a "5th" Slam, featuring a 96-player draw, which requires seven matches to win

  • The Miami Open has a festive feel and is considered the "Latin" slam, and it also requires seven matches to win

Grueling Conditions

  • Indian Wells is played in dry, hot or cold conditions, with slow, high-bouncing balls from the dry California desert

  • The Miami Open is played in the heavy, humid, energy-sapping conditions of the Florida coast

Mental & Physical

  • Unlike the Slams, where there is a day of rest between matches, players play daily matches for most of the four weeks.

Rankings Springboard & Historical Rarity

  • 10 of the 11 players to complete the feat (win both Indian Wells and Miami Open in the same year) have gone on to become number 1 in the world.

  • 7 Men: Jim Courier, Michael Chang, Pete Sampras, Marcelo Rios, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic

  • 4 Women: Steffi Graf, Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka, Iga Swiatek

The ATP and WTA tours have so much depth. Any top 50 player can beat another on any given day. Winning one of these tournaments would be a special accomplishment in a player's career, but to win both would be extraordinary. To do so requires consistency to stick to a game plan that excels in tough conditions. Indian Wells can be hot and cold in the same day. Miami can be heavy, humid, and windy with periods of quick, passing showers that can throw off your rhythm. Resiliency must be a player's mantra to overcome these grueling conditions. The spotlight only grows brighter as there's no reset between the tournaments, making the Sunshine Double a rare feat.

Winning the Sunshine Double doesn't happen by accident. It displays consistency over two weeks, over surfaces that play differently, and over two of the deepest fields outside the majors.

In a sport measured by legacy, winning both Indian Wells and Miami places a player in rare company. It's not just a hot streak. It's a mark of sustained excellence that inspires admiration and pride in tennis history.

And that's why winning the Sunshine Double is so prestigious

It defines greatness.
